How to Clean a Faux Fur Pillow

Aug. 30, 2016

Faux fur pillows are easily damaged by improper cleaning techniques. Heat will cause matting and can melt the long fibers, while too much water can ruin some types of faux fur.

Use a Gentle Touch

To freshen the pillow without using water, rub some cornstarch on it or put it in a bag with cornstarch and shake it around. Let the cornstarch sit on the pillow for about 5 minutes and then shake or brush it off. For spills or spots, use a damp rag and mild detergent to spot-clean the pillow. Rub gently, taking care not to mat or tangle the fibers. Wipe away any remaining detergent with a clean damp rag, fluff the fibers and let it air dry. If the pillow requires additional cleaning, check the tag to determine whether it is made of acrylic or another material. If it is acrylic, wash the pillow by hand in cold water or in the machine on the gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Once it has been cleaned, fluff the furry fibers and hang or lay it out to dry. Do not put the pillow in the dryer. Even a small amount of heat could melt or permanently mat the fibers. If the faux fur is made of a material other than acrylic, it will need to be dry cleaned.
